The Digital Media Library is an initiative of Cinemedia (previously State Film Centre of Victoria).

. It is a collaborative project between Cinemedia, Silicon Graphics and Monash University.

The project began in June 1996 and has built a Digital Media Library, for managing and delivering large digital video collections. The project is continuing its development work and is making the service available to customers under the title of SWIFT.

Monash University through the Centre for Telecommunications and Information Engineering, has been involved in server/network design, MPEG encoding, advanced delivery methods, and developing content management software.

The project has drawn heavily on the research expertise of the ANSPAG research group at Monash University.
