VISIONEERING the FUTURE

Dr Russell Naughton has joined his former RMIT Ph.D. supervisor Professor John Bird at Monash's CTIE to work on the development of concepts and prototypes for interactive digital television.

Russell's research site Adventures in CyberSound has become an academically referenced site for our radio future and the new site Visioneering the Future will hopefully reach the same exposure for those seeking a similar vision for television.

LAWRENCE HARGRAVE

Lawrence Hargrave is one of the unsung heroes of Australian history. Born in England in 1850 but emigrating to Australia at 15, Hargrave went on to develop many of the basic principles of aviation later adapted by the more well known pioneers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, Glenn Curtiss and Gabriel Voisin.

A new website devoted to Hargrave and an adjunct to the Hargrave (now Hargrave-Andrew) Library at Monash, highlights both his work and at the same time gives an online 'virtual display space' for those following in his footsteps and working in such areas as micro, robotic and autonomous air vehicles.

CTIE CONFERENCE '99

The Clayton area of Melbourne supports a wide range of telecommunications research. Two of the largest organizations are Monash University and Telstra Research Laboratories. CTIE sponsored an informal conference to encourage stronger collaboration between researchers in close proximity.

Key representatives from Telstra Research Labs were invited to present an overview of some of their current activities. There will also be some presentations on some externally funded development projects within CTIE.

MONEY, MARKETS and the ECONOMY

CTIE Director, Professor Greg Egan, was instrumental in establishing a strategic collaboration between the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Monash University. The result was the program Money, Markets and The Economy

Although originally targeting radio broadcasting of educational material, CTIE's advice now means there is a strong emphasis on Internet delivery as well as radio. CTIE expects that the next generation of programs will emphasise video delivery, an area in which CTIE excels.
