East Sale Wind Finding and Weather Watch Radar

Type: WF44 S Band
Availability (Typical): Midnight - 03.00; 04.30 - 09.00; 10.30 - 15.00;
6.30 - 21.00; 22.30 - Midnight

Interpretation Notes: The East Sale radar has a reasonable range in all directions except to the north where the hills of the Great Dividing Range at about 40km require the use of a Permanent Echo Suppression System. This results in rainfall over the mountains being overestimated in intensity. The most common Permanent Echo region is about 75 to 125 km in range from the north through to the northeast.

Subsidence inversions with high pressure systems occasionally produce anomalous propagation that appears as light rain (0.2mm to 2.0mm/hour) particularly over regions to the east of the radar. Rainfall rates are underestimated within 5km of the radar. The WF44 does not detect drizzle, however is superior to the C band radar in the detection of thunderstorms when they are to the rear of other storms.
