Objective

The Network Applications and Performance (NAP) project is developing expertise in designing and implementing systems for the delivery of audio and video services over a range of new telecommunication networks.

Introduction

The NAP project is conducted by the ANSPAG group, which comprises Monash University, Siemens, and Telstra as core partners. The project has made substantial progress in achieving its objectives as stated in the Commonwealth Agreement. These objectives were to build a base of expertise in new telecommunications technologies including asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), build a versatile network testbed, create an understanding in the community of the capabilities of new networks, and stimulate the development of applications. The project has achieved all its first year milestones stated in the Commonwealth agreement, and has met its new milestones set each year.

The project was formally reviewed in July 1997 by Dr Bob Cooper from the United Kingdom who played a key role in the development of broadband networks in the UK. Dr Cooper stated that RANSPAG has succeeded in creating a strong, integrated and coherent project. It has developed a state-of-art network testbed and has used the testbed to support the development of two applications that make effective use of high quality video communication. The applications have been developed with the cooperation of a real user community and one application is already deployed in production use.S Dr Cooper also stated that RSeveral international IT companies have commented that they consider ANSPAG to be among the top centres for advanced networking in the world.
