Research Planned
The focus of activities over the next 12 months will be the development
of techniques for a distributed video service, where the video content
most commonly used by users is located close to the users. The video
content will be managed centrally to ensure that copyright is
appropriately protected. The service will be trailed with schools in
Victoria, and also form part of the pilot network for the Digital
Docklands project.
ANSPAG will also continue to develop solutions for distance education
that can operate over lower bandwidth networks such as the phone network.
ANSPAG staff will investigate further the integration between ATM and IP
network technology, in particular the ability to provide video services
with an appropriate quality of service over heterogeneous networks.
Cisco will provide routers for the network testbed to enable measurements
on the performance of various approaches to quality of service, including
the use of the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) and priority queuing.
ANSPAG is also working with PictureTel and Fore Systems in the deployment
of high quality PC based video conferencing for collaboration in
industries such as education and film production. The systems will use
the new established H.323 standards and interwork with the H.320 video
conference systems already in place. Trials will be conducted with ACSys
and DSTC.
