Research Activities

The major research areas of the RDP continued to produce new and innovative solutions. The work on metadata included:
  • development of a metadata creation tool (Reggie) that provides flexible element definitions and supported the latest emerging standards.
  • key technology participants in the MetaWeb project and delivered metadata tools for the Australian community to deploy.
  • deploying a metadata-based pilot system for the Queensland Government.
  • founding members of the Resource Description Framework (RDF) working group within the World-Wide Web Consortium. RDF will be solving many of the interoperability problems facing industry today.
The work and highlights of the search tools activities included:
  • commercialisation of the HotOIL distributed search engine.
  • enhancements to the workgroup search engine (WhatsHot).
  • uptake of the periodic search engine (ORION) by a commercial client.
  • key technology participants in the ZedWeb project and delivered distributed library search tools for the National Library of Australia and the University of Queensland Library.
  • sold Z39.50 tool to the European Space Agency.
The RDP was also very successful in external events. They were active organisers of the 7th International World-Wide-Web Conference in April in Brisbane. The RDP hosted its successful 'Day in the Life of Metadata' full-day seminar across Australia with an even larger number of attendees this year.

A number of RDP staff also participated in sabbaticals to other organisations in Japan and the USA.
