Distributed Geographic Information Systems (DGIS) Subproject

DGIS is developing application demonstrators and a general service-based infrastructure for querying, and high performance processing of distributed archives of satellite data and other geospatial data. The project has developed an image archive repository management system, based on a standardised interface using CORBA, for managing geospatial imagery such as photo-reconnaissance data.

The project is also developing demonstration systems for the receipt and processing of near real time data in support of bushfire emergency response and planning. The complementary systems developed by the CROP and DGIS projects will be integrated to develop a general system for supporting applications utilising distributed archives of geospatial and earth observation data.

Achievements

  • Preliminary work has resulted in the development of a Java applet interface to a simple firefront model developed by CSIRO, which allows the program to be run remotely over the Web. This enables the scenario of running the program in the field on a laptop connected to a server via a modem using a mobile phone.
  • System architecture for geospatial imagery server access has been designed using Java and CORBA.
  • A prototype on-line geospatial imagery archive management system, conforming to a subset of the USGIS/GIAS specification, has been implemented.
  • A contract with DSTO to provide a GIAS compliant image archive system library, and a joint technical paper was written.

Research Planned

  • Prototype of Earth Observation Satellite/Geographic Information System software library and data delivery system and its integration with the CROP and DISCWorld prototypes.
  • Prototype of enhanced ERIC EOS data access and processing demonstrator.
  • Demonstration of rainfall-vegetation correlation for landcare applications.
  • Bushfire simulation prototype demonstration and incorporation of real-time data feed.
  • Release of version 1 of Open GIS Application Programming Interface for EOS/GIS library.
